Making Connections and Learning Together (MCaLT): Promoting Social and Emotional Learning Using Embedded Classroom Strategies
As a part of the Making Connections and Learning Together (MCaLT) program, the first grade students in this urban school are engaged in a cooperative group learning activity designed and facilitated by the occupational therapist, Robin Kirschenbaum, OTD, OTR/L. They are using the Zones of Regulation1 tools worksheet to experience, assess and record the impact of different sensory-based tools and strategies on their levels of arousal/ alertness. The tools and strategies are organized into centers and each group rotates to explore the activities, share their experiences and perspectives with their peers and record their responses. The tools worksheet is used by the students and teachers during everyday learning activities and school routines to develop and practice self-regulation strategies.
